  1. I think the English were captured by the hostile Spanish comeing up from the south. I think the mythical legend 'croatoan' means revenge because the English and Spanish were at war. If they were at sea or on a ship their bodies would not have been found at Roanoke. Also, the English were holding the Indians hostage for information, so it couldn't have been them either. www.nationalcenter.org/ColonyofRoanoke.html

  5. I think the settlers were captured by Native Americans. I believe this because no one knows what the word “Croatoan” means. The word isn’t Spanish. This means the Spanish didn’t write it, and the only people that were also there were Native Americans.

  6. I think their ship began to sink and one guy was able to swim back to shore. All the others died. That would explain why people only found one set of remains. I think "Croatoan" was an indian tribe that was marking the land as theirs after finding it abandoned.

  7. I think the English we're captured by Native Americans. I say this, because the word "Croatoan" is English; not spanish. So, they weren't captured by the Spanish but, the possibility of them sinking in the ocean is very low; because they most likely would have told somebody through a letter or piece of evidence. "Croatoan" means revenge so, maybe they we're thinking about getting revenge on the Indian's for something they did, for example, stealing, murder, or even kidnapping.

  8. I think the English settlers were killed by Natives. Obviously the word "Croatoan" is not English nor Spanish, so it's bound to be Native. The word was probably left there to mark what they had done. Because there were no houses left, I think, the Natives took them down and used them for fires or their own shelters.

  9. The English colonist were very ill prepared, therefore they depended mostly on the idians providing for them. Not to say the Englishmen would steal, kidnapp and often abused local indians. This makes me come to a conclusion that the idians got tired of the common miss treatment and began to kill/poison the English Settlers.http://www.nationalcenter.org/ColonyofRoanoke.html

  10. The colonists were taking up land of the natives and taking their game. The Indians were getting mad at them so they kidnapped them and the English never heard of them again. So "Croatoan" means kidnap in the Indians native language.

  11. I think the English were captured by the Spanish. I think the mythical lagend of "Croatoan" means revenge because the English and Spanish were at war and since they were out at the se, most likely their bodies wouldn't be found at Roanoke.

  12. I think the English were captured by the Native Americans, because "Croatoan" is a Indian tribe. So, they weren't captured by the Spanish or got lost at sea.

  13. I think the colonists were taken in by the Native Americans. There was a Croatoan island to the south. The colonists probably wrote CROATOAN in the tree so that if the English came back to Roanoke, they would know where the colonists went. The dead bodies were those who died of starvation before the colonists decided to move. There were probably Native Americans at Croatoan island who wanted to help the starving colonists and took them in as members of their tribe. The reason I think the Native Americans were nice enough not to kill the colonists is that the indians most likely hadn't encountered white men before and didn't know about their intentions to steal their land. Another reason I think the indians didn't kill the colonists is that the indians were friendly to the pilgrims in 1620, so why would they not be nice before 1620?

  14. According to the sites I've been to, the word "Croatoan" is not a word in English or Spanish. It was the name of an island close by, and also the name of the kind Native Americans that inhabited it. I think it is probable that they could have built a boat of some sort by stripping their houses and shelters. Then, they could have gone to the island of Croatoan and lived with its inhabitants. Or, they cold have just moved to a new area. The real settlers of Jamestown were there 300 years before the English. A slave ship went astray and crashed in the area were Jamestown was founded. The slaves started a settlement there and began trading with the Native American tribes close by. So, it is possible that they could have gone there.

  16. I think the colonist were absorbed by the Croatoan native Americans. The neighboring island at that time was settled by the natives. Also many journalists have mentioned that the Croatoan's ancestors the Hatteras understood English, had grey and green eyes and also had a few white tribes people and ancestors.

  17. i think that the native Americans killed the colonists over a 2 year time period because they probably were trying to protect their land. They didn't know that the colonists were nice and they were just trying to start a new life.

  18. I think that the settlers were captured by the native Americans. The word that was carved onto the log was an unknown word. So therefor it was probably a Native American language. The skull means that the Native Americans took over that land and killed the settlers or they adapted to their life.

  19. I think that the colonists came to the New World unprepared for all the challenges. I think that they needed help for there problems so they went to the Native Americans. I think they got help but for return the had to join the tribe. There is evidence of Native Americans having blue eyes which is from either the English men or the Spaniards. my theory is that they joined the tribes that surrounded the area.

  20. I think that the natives killed them because they were taking their land. The reason they only found one skull was because the natives threw the bodies into the sea.

  21. I think that the English were captured by the natives. The word "croatoan" could possibly be the name of a tribe that wiped out the colony, and the carving could have been a warning sign to other settlers, not to settle on that land.

  22. Here is my theory to what really happened at roanoke. On the video it showed that a person was clubbed with a chunk of wood.On the wood was inscribed CROATON.I think that indians had attacked and that in honor of their chief, they carved his name in their clubs.

  23. I believe that the colonists decided to leave with the Native Americans. "Croaton" was the name of an island near Roanoke and I theorize that the colonists took apart their homes to create rafts and also to build their homes on the islands. For the man who's remains were found: he was the kind of person that would not go along with the group so he decided to stay and try to survive against all odds...

  24. Well I think that all of the theories make sense in a way, so why not could have all of them happened? Maybe they knew the Spanish were coming and since they didn't have anything to defend themselves they tried to be apart of a Indian tribe? I read they were rude and captured the Indians(Wow right from the start!) so maybe some were killed or scalped possibly. The survivors could've tried to build a boat and left, but got lost at sea. The Indians also might have put one of the colonists skeletons there as if to warn others. Also, the colonists did capture some Indians so maybe they got frustrated with an Indian and killed him. The Indians could have put there friends only remains there and maybe the word was his name? Like a small grave.

The one that maes the most sense to me is the first one. We did not like Spain they didn't like us either. So they sent troops to kill off the colonist. But all of those make sense my next opninion about the second theory, is that indians got tired of us useing them and us treating them badly. This ended up in graves and many wounded familys.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I think the second theory is correct. The indians could have taken colonists and over the 3 years just transferred them to native culture, because we treated them terribly. I also believe it could be the 3rd because that place is kind of close to the bermuda triangle where many ships are said to be lost.

I think that the Colonists either went with the Indians willingly of were forced to because the word croatoan is a old Indian tribe name

  29. I think the 2nd theory because of the word "croatoan" and the English could of been taken by Natives and might have been hostages.

  30. I think that the natives who lived their first, saw that these people were trying to stay alive and wernt doing to good of a job of it. And some tribes saw it as "the weak die and the strong provaile." CROATOAN more than likely means strength or victory, or maybee even the name of tribe that killed them.

  31. Theory 1 and 3 make the most sence to me.....I believe that the colonist may have took the Indians against their will and left Roanoke on their boats. They may have got lost at sea or were attaked by the spanish.
