Native American Reservations

Watch these links and give one observation (detailed) about each link.  Think about what life would be like for you if you lived in Pine Ridge.  What could be done to assist the youth on the reservations?  Do you think many teens are able to leave the reservation to attend college "for free?" Why/why not?

  1. I see that they live in very poor conditions, and it would be really hard to live there with no water heat and other needs and they probably cant make it into colledge because they have no basic education to make it into a college.

  2. In the first video it was snowing and they had nothing to keep them warm, they have no heat and no water. In the second video they were doing anything the could to get money. In the third video they had nothing and teens were killing themselves and others wanted to die. If there was a school for the kids to go to and a nicer area the teens might not want to kill themselves. I don't think that many teens are able to leave the reservations to go to college because they might not have enough education for any college to want them of they might have to stay home to help their families.

  3. Back then I would say no, the Indians were treated very bad. They made them move to horrible conditions that made it hard for them to survive and live. You could possibly assist them by sending food to them or water. But other than that there couldn't be much done unless you gave their land back.

  4. the lakota tribe was vey poor and they would do anything to put food on the table some people wanted themselves to die only because family or relatives had already passed away they had no food or water alot of the times and they believed that the government wanted them to die out because they were indian tribes and lived on american land for free.

  5. The people have nothing to keep them warm in the winters. They also dont have the money to buy iteams. Many teens are die and they are killing them selfs. I don't think that many teens are able to leave their homes to go to college because they might not have enough education for any college to want them of they might have to stay home to help the family.

  6. These people that are having to live on the Pine Ridge Reservation are living in shacks and broken homes. Even though Natives will be able to attend college for free the transportation and food is the problem for them. They are living below the poverty line and having to drink their lives away.

  7. In the first video the people in the reservation are very poor and kind people who deserve much more. The second video has the highest teen suicide rate and the life expectancy is only 50. In the third video they have no electricity, running water and often no heat. Life in the reservation would be really hard for me because I am not used to living like that. A way to help the teens there are for some people to go out and volunteer and build schools and rebuild houses. I don’t think many teens are able to leave because a lot of them don’t know any other way of living.

  8. In one video it shoes the harsh weather conditions and the effects of it on their poor living conditions. The second video shows people pushing a car in hope to sell a TV just for food. In the last video there are photos of there ancestors trying to fend off the land and it shows how Pine Ridge is right next to were 200 people were killed. Re-building/fixing their houses, getting rid of the alchohol and weapons for suicide, sending out food, and building schools would be a way to help the youth on the reservation. No i do not think that the teens are able to leave and go to college for free. Not in any of the videos did it say they had any kind of education system and some only/still speak the native language. Also, they dont have money or the resources to be able to leave.

  9. in the 1st vedio it looked like alot of poverty and harsh living conditions. in the 2nd vedio, it wassad how the teens were comiting sucide and that the tribe didnt have any elictricty. there was also alot of acohol abuse and domestic vilonce.the third videio the teens were also killing themselves, the schooling is very bad and the teens do not have a good chance of making it to collage.

  10. In the first video, it was very obvious that the conditions were very poor. The houses looked run down. The unemployment rates are extremely high, and the Indians are so depressed that they drink in order to escape the horror of their everyday lives. In the second video, Pine Ridge has the highest teenage suicide rate in the U.S.! That's amazing! The average life expectancy is 46, compared to the national average of about 80 or so. In the third video, the video shows again how poor they are. The people are living in 3rd world country conditions. Who knew they were SO POOR? The indians are hanging on a thread, struggling to survive, while there are people in Southlake living almost like royalty! The people of Pine Ridge don't even have electricity, running water, or heat.
What can be done to assist the youth? I believe missionaries could be sent in to build churches and spread the gospel. That would help bring peace to the teens, them knowing God. Schoolhouses with experienced teachers and good living conditions could be built. If the children have good education and someone to look up to, there would be less suicides. Counselors would also be available for the teens to speak with about their troubles.
I don't believe teens are able to leave the reservation to go to college. First of all, the teens haven't been given a decent education to even be ready to go to college. Second, they might have duties back at home. They might have to take care of their grandparents or siblings. Last, there is no real way for the teens to go to college. Many might not even have a car.
Living conditions should be greatly improved at the Pine Ridge Reservation. After all, they are the real founders of America. So why are they the poorest?

    ReplyDelete
  11. i think it would suck living there because the people didn't have McDonnell's down the street to get food and the schools didn't have what we have and they were really poor last the teens didn't have the right education to get into collage-zach shivers

  12. I think it would very difficult to live in the Pine Ridge Reservation. The Native Americans living there don't have the basic accomodations, like warm water, that we take for granted.

In the first video, I noticed that most of the residents didn't live in a very large house and also didn't have a very good way for staying warm.

In the second video, I found it crazy that just to sell a television they have to push a car to the pawn shop. All of this is to make a little bit of money, which contributes to their $2,500 a year.

In the third video, I was stunned to see how high the infant mortality rate (300% the national average) and diabetes rate (800 times greater than the national average) were. I was also slightly suprised that a lot of the elders in the reservation speak nothing but Lakota, the main language spoken on the reservation.

The above fact is part of the reason I believe they won't leave the reservation to go to college for "free." They can't speak the language neccessary to live anywhere but the reservation. They also know no other life but the hard one at the reservation and don't realize they have other options. Even if they could leave, many of them wouldn't understand the modern world and would return to the reservation. Also, most of them need to stay and helo their family survive by doing anything they can to get more food on the table. Even the young people have to do this.

The young people on the reservation need to be helped. One way to do this would be to provide them with more clothing that would keep them warm in the winter. They also need modern technology to keep up with the world and not get confused with the new things we have. To prevent teen suicide, counseling centers need to be set up to help them sort through their problems. Another way for them to forget their worries would be to set up a youth sport league where kids could play to get excercise, escape their problems, or to blow off some steam. No matter what, though, they need to be helped.

  13. In the first video you see the living conditions of the Lakota. They live in run-down homes and don't have warm water. They go through harsh winters and don't have the necesities to survive. In the second video it explains how they have the highest teen suicide rate and often times they will turn to alcohol to let all their problems go away. The third video tells facts about the Lakota compared to the rest of our country. Amost no one has a job and its easier to get sick. It also explains that the people dont want to leave becaue they grew up there and its the only way they know how to live.

  14. In the first video, the people live in shacks and terrible conditions. A lot, of them die or kill themselves during the Winter. In the second video you hear the people first hand for why they kill themselves and why they won't move. In the last video, you see all the facts about Pine Ridge's people. The facts were about infant mortality rates, teen suicidal rates, etc.
Life would be awful in Pine Ridge! It would be a big change from the luxorious life that we live in.
We could send missionaries and charities to help the poor and homeless. Build a homeless shelter and an orphanage too. No, because most of them probobly don't go to school or have to run the family business or take care of there family.

    ReplyDelete
  15. What i had saw in those videos is that the conditions are not easy to live in, mostly in the winter since they have nothing they could use to there advantage. The way they live isn't right it's not no way to live in at all. Something that I could do is probably, gather things that are not sentimentally atached to me like clothes, bottle waters, blankets, or money to help pay thier rent. There are many things in this world that are wrong but the life in Pine Ridge is no way to live. MICHAEL KEARNEY P-3

  16. In the first vidieo it showed the living conditions of the Lakota Indians and the harsh winters that they live through. In the second, it showed that they have alot higher ten suiside rate and that most turn to dinking to forget what they are living through. And the last one showed that they don't leave because that is all they know and it would be hard for them to compltely change there life-style. And it was also close to the sacred place of where their ansesters were masicured.

I think it would be hard to move from here to there because we are so used to living with everything we need (and don't) that we won't be able to change.

I think we could send help and the government could send help to the lowly countrys.

I think we should let them go to school for free because they will probably never have the money so they will probably never have the education they need to someday help his family.

  17. My observation from the Pine Ridge Reservation Disaster Area by Eirene video is that the Pine Ridge Reservation is the poorest county in the United States, and life is very hard for the people. My observation from The Poorest Place in America video is that extreme poverty has led to a lot of alcohol abuse which has led to a lot of domestic violence. My observation from the Pine Ridge Reservation video is that there are people in the US living in 3rd world conditions. I think that if I lived on the Pine Ridge Reservation that life would be very hard, and it would be very different than how we live in Keller. There are probably a lot of things that can be done to assist the youth on the reservations. Getting the reservations better schools, housing, and medical care would be a way to help the youth. I don’t think many youth are able to leave the reservation to go to college. On the reservation the teen suicide rate is 150 times higher than the US average, and the average income is $2600-$3500 a year, so there isn’t any money to get off the reservation, or to go to school.

  18. In the first video, there's really poor living conditions and it gives you a look at what their lives are like. Then, in the second video, it gives you more of the facts and shows how this is a growing problem. The third video shows just how bad things are. I think that the reason the teen suicide rate is so high, is because they see how their elders live, and what has become of their lives. They want to have to live like that, but they really have no choice, since there's no money to get away. The way the youth could be helped is maybe sending someone out there to sponser some kids. Help get them out of the situation they're in, put them through a good school or something. Also, I don't think a lot of teens leave to attend college, even if they can go for free. Often times, the have to stay back and take care of their families. Or they don't have a way of leaving. Sometimes they're probably just to proud to accept that help too.- Emma Hinkley

  19. Link 1-one observations is that there is more than one observation but the are all spread apart.
Link 2-one observation is that maybe our government should spend more money here than in other countries.
Link 3-one observation is that the reservation signs had bullet holes in them.
I think they could help the kids by creating schools to teach them english and different skills.
I think the teens do not go to college for free because they are not educated enough.

    ReplyDelete
  20. In the first video it shows their terrible living conditions. It shows how they suffer through every season, especially winter. In the second video, it explains why they have the highest teen suicide rate in the country and why many of the adults are alcoholics. In the last video it shows why they do not leave. They honestly do not know any other way to live.

I think life on the reservation would be very difficult. All of the things we consider normal, like warm water and a heater, they do not have. Also, because of the low unemployment rate, they can not afford basic neccesities like jackets, or food.

For the teens, I think we can offer programs to show them other ways to things, but still remain true to their culture. This way, they can still survive in what we consider the normal world, and continue teaching their children their traditions.

As for college, I do not think many of the teens would even want to go. They probably do not even have the proper grade school schooling to make it. Also, they might have to be the ones to put food on the table. Also they might not know how to function in our modern world. Because of their lack of schooling, how would they be able to get around in a city? Or they may not know how to use modern technology.

  21. In the first Movie it was crazy to see what their houses looked like and how small they were, and how sad it is about how much they drink. In the second one I thouught it was awful that she wants to drink till she is dead, becuase that what her brother did. In the thrid one i thought it was horrible how much higher all of the statics where than the national average. We need to do something about that. We say we try to keep those numbers down but we only care about the cities the world sees and views as important. I would not be able to live with out an ipod or computer let alone water. I can't think about living on the reservation. We need to try and ontreact with the youth more and just get them to see that there's a life waiting for them if they want to get out, so they won't have to commit suicide to get out og their life. I don't think they have the basic education to be able to go to college. I also think they don't want to go either.

    ReplyDelete
  22. In the first video, the people were very poor and basically had to fend for themselves because they didn't have an education so they couldn't even afford the basic things in life. Basically in all of these videos there common base is not having an education. Also this lead to there environment they live in, how well they maintained their health (alcoholism, suicide, etc.) I think to fix these problems they need to start educating the kids in some way were they can go to get one. If not, the population of the unemployed is just going to keep increasing because colleges aren't going to accept people who have an elementary kind of education/mind set. If they don't go to college, suicide of these people will keep increasing, alcoholism, and this poor way of maintaining their health.

  23. In the first video I noticed that the city did not have many houses or buildings and the ones they did have were very small and run-down looking.

In the second video I noticed that they do not have even warm water. The city has a lot of land and that could make it hard on the people to get places if they do not have a car.

In the third video I noticed how bad the living conditions really were. They don't have electricity, running water, or heat. South Dakota is really cold in the winter so some die of hypothermia.

I think that the president or who ever need to step in and help these people. I think to help the youth the could just provide schools and a better education for them. If they went to school and actually learned and liked it they would make friends and get involved then when they get older they could go to college.

I think a lot of teens do not leave the reservation to go to college because they do not have a good enough education already and they need to stay home to take care of their families.

  24. I have to say first,if you are going to build a reservation, don't build it where winters are below freezing. In the first video it seems like poor living conditions and living below poverty is a normal lifestyle. It also seems like the government could care less and they shouldn't.In the second video $2,600 is hard to live off of month and year-wise.In the third video baby mortality rates are tremendous.I dont think teens could go to college because they probably have a low education or may not even know any other language excect lakota.

  25. In the first video it showed the harsh living conditions of the people that live at Pine Ridge. In the second video it mentioned that the average life expectancy is only around 50 years old. In the third video thy said that the teen suicide rate is 150 times higher than the Nation's teen suicide rate. Life ont he reservation would be extremely difficult and harsh especialy during winter and summer because of the weather conditions. If anything could be done for the children on the reservation I think that the government could at least build and sponser a shelter that children could go to for food and shelter. I think that going to college all depends on your current life situation. If they are elligabe to get a scholarship and are educated enough then I think they'd be able to go but would have to worry about food and a place to stay and extra things that the scholarship won't pay for. It would be difficult for them to make arrangements for college to actually be effective.

  26. In the first video I observed that their towns/villages have not yet been revolutionized due to their lack of money.
I saw in the second video that they have such scarce income that they can barely afford to survive.

The third video I noticed that they are very traditional and follow their beliefs. Aswell as help other citizens; they are very friendly.

To help the young ones over there we need to fund them with money and help for food and water. Also I think we should build a school and teach them some English so they can for in the social world.

I think either because they can't Speak any other language or their families can't let them leave because they won't survive.

In the second video I realized that most of the Native Americans are poorer and that many just got electricity.

In the third video I realized that the expected life expectancy on the pine ridge reservation is only 46 years.

To help the youth on the reservation, you could give them food and water for free each day, and do the same with the parents.

  30. in the first video i found out about the Lakotas and how they lived and what the conditions were like.

in the second video it showed the lack of money the natives had and how they didn't live a good, healthy life do to this.

and in the third video i learned about the fact that they didn't leave because they would have to accustom all over again to new surrounding but if i were one of the natives i would've gotten out of that place.

we could've provided clothing, food, or some sort of shelter for the youth so that they could live a better life

and i do believe living at pine rode would be an impossible task for someone like me and this youths generation because we are well treated and don't really interact with what nature CAN give us.

i do believe colleges should let the native attend for free because after all they could not be here right now if it weren't for us. Its a peace offering for what we did and a very minor one. they should get special benefits also.

  32. In the first video it explained how the conditions they live in are very bad and/or poor. The second video talks about the bight suicide rate and how they don't think u will live past 50. And the 3rd video discribes there past and how they used to be a good and how they were living well. I don't think they could make it to colloge because they don't have the proper education and probly can't go on scholorship because who's going to look at a poor beaten down school. But all this really put me to thought about how we take things like extra food or torn clothes or even just stained clothes and throw them away when people are still living like this.

I personaly think they should get educational benefits because how badly jackson cheaped them out of their court case and made them walk the trail of tears and have tons upon tons of them die in the process of it all. I think we could also help them by improving the poor's living conditions and maby start some sort of charity organization to help them in their times of need (but not when they are living the high lives ontop of casinos and becoming millionars).

in the second video it talks about the medical conditions that are lurking in the shadows among the indians and also the diabities rat is 300% over national rates i personaly thought that was perposterous then i cunducted a search and i found statistics on the pine ridge county and compared it to other poor areas and sadly to say pine ridge indian reservation is the most poorest area in the united states

in the third video it talks about why the people are there its because their ansesters were massacerd in that area this event was caused by general cusstered a man who graduated at the bottom of his class to me this man is an idiot. also the other question was why dont these people just leave the fact is they dont no where to go and the elderly cannot travel that far but on the bright side the people of pine ridge indian reservation still keep thier culture alive and well they have celabrations and cerimonies to remmember their loved ones

  38. In all three videos the living conditions were horrible. They are the poorest city in the US. The living conditions such as, harsh winters, small unheated houses, and fertile land make it very hard for the people to survive. In the second video one of the points metioned was about the diabetes rate was 300% over the national rate. I was very shocked that one place could be in such harsh conditions. I do not believe that the kids would be able to attand a college because of there financial issuses, buy they would possibly be able to leave to go to college because they are Native American. 39. In the first video, it shows that the Native Americans live in horrible conditions and that they simply aren't the way that they used to be back then. The lack of food and water is killing them. Someone (the government or some organization) should come to them and help them out.

In the second one, it shows that they are one the poorest people in the nation. Lots of the Native Americans have resorted to gambling and suicide. They need support from an organization, or the government.

The third video says that the infant mortality rate is 300% (3x) the nation average. That is bad and must be fixed someday or the Natives will die out sooner or later.

I don't think that teens are able to leave the reservation to attend college for free because I don't think that people are able to sustain themselves outside of the reservation if they're used to gambling and drinking. They also won't have a place to live because the dorms are most likely not covered.

  40. The first video showed the horrible and unhealthy living conditions that the Indians at the reservation have to live in.
The second video shows how drastically low the living rate is and how high the suicide rate is.
The third video showed why most if not all of the Indians stay in the reservation because of the ancestors and history.
The youth on reservations have probably only seen life as it is on the reservation so maybe we could put more energy and money into working with the youth by showing them how life is outside the reservation and how their life could be if they chose to leave.
I think teens have the opportunity to leave the reservation through their academics but many of them don't believe they can do it, or just want to stay at the reservation with their family, they might even believe their is no way out the life they have already. So even though they are given the chance for a "free ride" many just don't wont to take it.

  41. In the first video, it shows and describes the living conditions and how people's houses are and how the winters are hard with them living in those conditions.
In the second video, it shows interviews of the people living there and gives everything through their perspective. It's also saying that instead of all the other problems the government is focusing on, they should take some time and do something about the problems in Pine Ridge.
In the third video, It gives the main facts about Pine Ridge and the people living there. It also tells about the ancestors of the people of Pine Ridge and their history.
I think you could assist the youth on the reservations by giving them better housing and open up more job oppritunities. I don't think many of the teens are able to go to college because they only know this way of living and wouldn't know how to support themselves. Also the teen suicide rate was very high.

The 3rd video shows that life expectancy is 46; suicide rate is 150 times higher than the average, 65% of the residents have no electricity, running water, and live without heat, most elders die of hypothermia, unemployed rate is 85%-95%, infant mortality rate is 300 times the average, and diabetes is 800 times the average. First, many of the elders only speak Lokta.
Second, there ancestors are buried in the sacred black hills were general custered encircled 200 Lokta and fired on them.
Third,Most of the town is uneducated.

If I lived there I believe I would struggle with everyday life because i would realize how much i take take for granted right now.

I think the public education could be improved, so the future generations could learn to create there own jobs.

I don't believe many teens leave the town for college because it is too expensive, though its free many families would not afford the housing, eating, and gasoline cost. Another reason is that the teens have very little education and would flunk out of college.

  44. The videos all showed the horrers of the Indian reservations in America today. The first video showed the terrable conditions that the Natives live in. The second video was a news report shows how poor the Natives, how drinking was one of the Natives only way of enjoying life, and how large the teen suicide rate is. The third and final video shows how many Natives are stuck on the reservations. The government could build therapy sessions for teens in depresion and they could build better schools for the reservation. No,because many of the teens have to support their families when they are young to when they are adults.

  45. I think life would be way different there than it is where I live. The harsh conditions those people live in are unbelievable. I think that they should make clubs/ fun thing such as sports camps etc for the children and teens to go to. They should also teach to them they terrible things suicide brings and why it is never the answer. I do not think many teens would be able to leave for college because they do not know any other life and that would be a very hard thing to go through.

In the first video I made an observation that many people are alcoholics because of the bad way they are living. But I think that it is sad because when they sober up its not like their problems are gone.

In the second I thought it was sad how easily people lost their hope. I thought when the lady said she wanted to die because her brother died was also a refelction on their living conditions because she doesnt have anything to live for and just wants to be with her brother in Heaven.

In the third I thought all of the facts of suicide rates and infant mortality rates were horrindous. The thing that stuck out to me the most was that the average life span was 46 years. That means that as well as living ioon those harsh conditions, many children are having to grow up without their parents.
